In the land of Asian dramas, there is always something good out there to dig into. We are asked about what we are currently watching, so we have begun a monthly blog about what we are currently watching. Follow along as Something Else and Song Rae share their current July watches. If you have seen or are watching any of these shows, please chime in and share your thoughts!
Something Else:
I'm fickle about my dramas, as some of you know. I'm either all-in or I'm dragging along until I find a new, hot drama. "My Roommate is a Gumiho" is still on my watchlist, but other dramas have superseded it because they are more interesting, frankly speaking. "That Winter, the Wind Blows" began to bore me so I sped watched then turned it loose. "On the Verge of Insanity" is still a favorite so I kept it on my list. The dramas listed below are new to me and this time around I'll letting you know why exactly I decided to watch them. Enjoy!
Mr. Queen (Viki.com) - It's on my list because I've been watching clips on Facebook and it looks funny AF. Yes, yes, everyone raved about it, but I wasn't interested then. I am now. Synopsis: Mr. Queen (2020)
The Uncanny Counter (Netflix) - No special reason other than that I was bored and it showed up on my queue at the right time. What struck me was that the ML had a disability and it made me curious. Also, I ride for underdogs. Song Rae has already seen this show and you can check out her blog post about it here. Synopsis: The Uncanny Counter (2020)
LOVE (ft. Marriage and Divorce) (Netflix) - Yes, I have talked all kinds of trash about this show and I stand by it! But, season 2 caught my interest in a way that season 1 did not. I'm looking forward to season 3 and really hope that it's the last one. Song Rae and I discuss the drama on this BGS Phone Call episode. Check out the synopsis here: Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) (2021)
The Devil Judge (Viki.com) - I only started to watch this because it reminded me a little of the film 1995 film, Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone. I was expecting sci-fi and I got a Batman-esque drama. Along with LOVE (ft. Marriage and Divorce), we discussed this drama in this BGS Phone Call episode. Synopsis: The Devil Judge (2021)
On the Verge of Insanity (Viki.com, Kocowa) - I'm starting episode 11 soon now that Viki has uploaded and subbed the latest episodes. I'm quite happy with this slice-of-life workplace drama, especially for the unassuming humor. There are hints that there will be a slow-burn romance between the leads, but sometimes these shows show smoke where there's no fire. Synopsis: On the Verge of Insanity (2021)
Song Rae:
It's August 2021 and hot girl summer has ended. Or in my case, Auntie 아줌마 Autumn has begun. On socials, I share some of what I am watching. Here is my list of current watches:
Master in the House - This is a Viki or Kocowa app show. I am currently on episode 159 of 200. It's a Sunday-only show. MitH is a variety show or in American terms a reality TV show. A lot of the episodes of late really prepared me for the Olympics and I was able to see some of the former masters actually compete which was 대박 (daebak). Synopsis: https://mydramalist.com/26762-all-the-butlers
Revolutionary Sisters - This is a Viki or Kocowa app drama. I am currently on episode 34 of 50. It's a Saturday/Sunday drama. We are dealing with a lot of making up and renewing of life choices and marriage. I have sort of fallen off since the Olympics have been airing but I will get back in synch next week. Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/Revolutionary_Sisters
Nevertheless - This is a Netflix show. I am currently on episode 8 of 10. It's a Saturday-only drama. This triangle is serious and the debates are hot & heavy. #TeamPotato, #TeamButterfly, or #TeamNabi - whichever one you choose, this drama will have you feeling some type of way. Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/Nevertheless_(Korean_Drama)
Monthly Magazine Home - This is an iQIYI and Viki drama. I am on episode 12 of 16. It's a Wednesday/Thursday drama. As Young Won and Ja Sung become closer and more people find out about them, I hurt for Shin Gyeom that much more. I know, I know he's not the poster boy but... At any rate, the other couple's development was SHOCKING! This is a fun watch!
Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/Monthly_House
The Witch's Diner - This is a TVING drama airing on Viki. I am currently on episode 4 of 16. This is a Friday drama. This drama has me very intrigued as I try to figure out what will happen next. The Witch seems to have some agenda that involves Lee Gil Yong and Jung Jin. The dreams Jin has leads me to suspect this spell has been on her for years. Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/The_Witch%27s_Diner
Hospital Playlist season 2 - This is a Netflix drama. I am currently on episode 6 of 12. This is an only Thursday drama. The doctors and their stories have sort of mellowed out but I am interested in seeing the development of Jun Wan & Ik Sun as well as Seok Hyeong and Min Ha. Those two relationships have been teetering for some time. Also, can Ms. Ro Sa and her boo thang just confess and be happy? Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/Hospital_Playlist_2
The Devil Judge - This is a Viki drama. I'm currently on episode 9 of 16. This is a Saturday/Sunday drama. The courts in this dystopian Korean future are dysfunctional and the devil judge comes to put "order" in the hands of the people, as he seeks his own revenge for the death of his older brother. Synopsis: https://asianwiki.com/The_Devil_Judge
